Who it helps

Indian founders and indie hackers pricing a SaaS, AI tool, course platform or membership — especially before launch, when one wrong assumption about fees or GST can quietly erase the margin.

How it works

It converts your price to a monthly figure, removes GST (only for Indian customers when you're registered, since eligible exports are zero-rated), applies the gateway fee to the amount actually charged plus GST on that fee, subtracts expected refunds and per-customer costs, and divides your fixed costs and profit target by what's left. It also shows how a ±20% price change moves everything.

Limitations

It models averages, not cash timing, chargebacks, income tax, annual-plan discounts or churn. Tax treatment depends on your facts — use it to plan, then confirm with a chartered accountant.

Common questions

Should my SaaS price include GST?

For consumers in India, prices that include GST (₹999 all-in) convert better because the checkout total matches the price they saw. For businesses that claim input tax credit, a price plus GST is normal and lets you keep more per sale. The calculator shows both: untick “price already includes GST” to compare.

How much does Razorpay charge per transaction?

Razorpay advertises a standard rate of 2% + GST on most domestic payments, with higher rates for international cards and some methods, and 18% GST is charged on the fee itself. Some plans list slightly different platform fees, and new accounts sometimes get promotional rates, so every rate here is editable. Check your own dashboard pricing page before relying on the numbers.

Do I charge GST to international customers?

Software sold to customers outside India can qualify as an export of services, which is zero-rated (0% GST) when the place of supply is outside India and you're paid in convertible foreign exchange. You normally file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) to export without paying IGST. Confirm your case with a CA.

What is a good contribution margin for SaaS?

There's no single right number, but software businesses typically keep a large share of each sale after direct costs, because that money has to pay for marketing, support and salaries. If AI usage costs are high, a low margin is an early signal to add usage limits or raise prices.

Why does the calculator round up customer counts?

You can't have 41.3 customers. Rounding up shows the smallest whole number that actually covers the cost or target.
